At the heart of Birmingham Newman University’s campus transformation is the Ryland Quad – a reimagined outdoor space that blends functionality, community, and heritage. The project was conceived as part of the university’s broader Estates Masterplan, with the goal of creating a central hub that supports student wellbeing, informal learning, and social connection. By replacing the outdated Edgbaston Halls with a contemporary, landscaped environment, the university has delivered a space that reflects its modern identity while honouring its history. The Ryland Quad has become a focal point for campus life, offering a dynamic setting for both everyday use and special events.
Key Features
1. Landscaped Public Realm
A major aspect of the project was the creation of a high-quality landscaped space. Raised lawns, tree planting, and a variety of seating options provide areas for relaxation, study, and group gatherings. The design supports year-round use and encourages students to spend more time outdoors.
2. Social and Learning Pods
Contemporary timber pods have been installed throughout the quad, offering sheltered spaces for informal learning, collaboration, and quiet reflection. These structures give students flexible environments to work in, outside the traditional classroom setting.
3. Heritage and Community Engagement
A statue of St. John Henry Newman, created by artist Tim Tolkien, serves as a new landmark, reinforcing the university’s identity. A time capsule, buried during the redevelopment, captures present-day campus life and connects it to future generations, fostering a sense of continuity and community.
