Project Details Project Intro

The City of Culture is a designation given to a city in the UK once every 4 years that celebrates the unique character of the city and how the culture is being nurtured in the future.  Hull received the award for 2017.

The award gave Hull City Council an unmissable opportunity to redevelop parts of the City Centre.

The landscape architects, Re-Form, wanted to make an impression by installing bespoke street furniture that connected Hull’s industrial past with its cosmopolitan present.  To this end, our R&D team spent hours developing the bespoke street furniture in collaboration with Re-Form.  A great example of this collaboration is the ‘fruit box’ furniture in the old Fruit Market district. Here, the furniture resembles old fruit boxes.  This furniture is a modification of the Boxer collection.

These have added relevance in the Post-Covid world as they have allowed the restaurants and cafe bars along Humber Street where they are located to spill out into the pedestrianised road. This creates a perfect area for outdoor restaurant seating.

Products Used

Due to the high profile of the project, the client had sufficient resource to commission fully bespoke furniture.  All furniture was manufactured from a very durable tropical Iroko hardwood, with a mild steel galvanised & powder coated frame for longevity.
