It is found everywhere, from retail parks to residential roof spaces, and its easy to see why. Raised edging is a great way to accommodate urban planting with soft landscaping.
However, like Henry Ford’s Model T, even the best innovations have plenty of scope for development. Today’s planter edging is no different from the planter edging first used 10 years ago.
Over those 10 years, flaws in the original concept have surfaced such as the difficulty of installation and the reliance on concrete, which contributes highly towards C02 emissions. These flaws are addressed by Velox Rapid Edge™.
A traditional system requires a large concrete foundation to enable the raised edging to be bolted to. This poses a threefold challenge when looking at podium level installation;
1. Can your podium take the extra weight of the concrete? Approximate 110kg of concrete foundation is required per linear meter of planter edging. That’s a lot of weight if you require, say 600lm of edging - 66 tons to be precise!
2. Can your podium take the increase in height due to the extra concrete foundation build up?
3. Can you guarantee zero penetration to the waterproofing whilst fixing holes are drilled?
In addition to this, consider the extra CO2 emissions that are created from the production of the concrete. Approximately 780kg of CO2 emissions for every ton of concrete produced. With our 600lm example, that’s over 50tons of carbon! We also must look at the overall time taken to install a traditional system. Firstly, the concrete needs to be poured and allowed to cure, edging positioned and precisely aligned, then fixed into place using power tools and thousands of fixings. This is a time-consuming process made slower by the need to comply with White Finger Regulations.

Small but strong, the locking comb is a crucial component of the Velox Rapid Edge securing the triangular supports and planter edging in place. Whilst it may look simple and square,
the base plate is also no dafty! The gravitational force of the soil above each precisely sized and positioned base plate, cancels the horizontal force of the soil from within the planter. Nothing elso is required other than the force of nature, no concrete and no fixings!

This option shows suitable aggregate infill, laid to take up the variations in the structural slab providing a level plain. This is a simple yet clever method of dealing with falls whilst reducing fire risk and spread through limiting the size of the void between paving and substrate. The type of aggregate is project specific.
This is where the Velox system takes up the variations in the structural slab whilst maintaining a top edge parallel to FFL. Whilst this option offers a simplified on site process, additional time is required during the design process.
