6 ways to improve Biodiversity Net Gain

How can you improve Biodiversity Net Gain, a policy which was recently made mandatory in the UK?  BNG aims to leave nature in a measurably better state than before development and protect and enhance the environments surrounding new developments.  Several factors affect the rating of a development which are important to understand.  For further information visit:  Biodiversity Net Gain: Just another regulation?

Here are several features which will improve BNG ratings:

1. Green Roofs and Living Walls

Green roofs and living walls provide additional green space in urban environments, supporting biodiversity while reducing urban heat island effects.  Integrating green roofs and living walls into the design will maximize green space and provide a habitat for birds, insects, and plants.

2. Permeable Paving and Rain Gardens

Permeable paving and rain gardens help manage stormwater runoff, replenish groundwater, and create habitat for amphibians and aquatic species.  By incorporating permeable paving and rain gardens into landscaping plans a project will effectively capture and treat stormwater runoff, enhancing both water quality and biodiversity.

3. Habitat Enhancement Structures

Install habitat enhancement structures such as bat boxes, bee hotels, and bird nesting boxes to provide shelter and nesting sites for a variety of species.  Strategically place habitat enhancement structures throughout development, this will create wildlife corridors and promote biodiversity connectivity.

4. Native Meadow and Wildflower Plantings

Establish native meadows and wildflower plantings to create valuable habitats for pollinators, butterflies, and other wildlife species.  Seeding native meadows and wildflower areas with a diverse mix of plant species will attract and support native wildlife.

5. Community Gardens and Allotments

Develop community gardens and allotments to provide green spaces for residents while supporting urban biodiversity and food production.  By collaborating with local community groups and organizations, land owners and developers can establish and maintain community gardens, fostering a sense of stewardship and environmental responsibility.

6. Green Corridors and Wildlife Crossings

Create green corridors and wildlife crossings to connect fragmented habitats and facilitate the movement of wildlife between natural areas. Designating green corridors and wildlife crossings within development plans could help promote biodiversity connectivity and reduce the risk of habitat isolation.

Conclusion

By implementing innovative strategies Biodiversity Net Gain ratings will improve and assist the creation of more sustainable and resilient developments.
