Transformation at 54 Wilson Street

BD Landscape Architects Transforms 54 Wilson Street into a Serene Retreat

One Crown Place, a striking new development in the heart of London, boasts a rooftop terrace that is as much a destination as it is a mere extension of the building. Designed by BD Landscape Architects, the space is a testament to innovative design and a deep understanding of how to create an urban oasis.

We met senior architect Emma Santamaria who talked us through the design, challenges and value this space adds to the building.

The architects envisioned an ‘outdoor room’ concept for the roof terrace at 54 Wilson Street, dividing the expansive terrace into intimate spaces that offer residents and visitors a variety of experiences. This approach encourages a sense of privacy and personalization, allowing individuals to enjoy the space in their own unique way.

A key challenge was integrating the landscape elements, such as planters, with the complex roof structure. The team at BD, working closely with Logic designed and manufactured the planter edging to match the roof’s falls and level changes. This innovative design approach not only accommodated the ambitious planting scheme but also created a seamless and visually appealing space.

The result is a lush, verdant rooftop that is both aesthetically pleasing and ecologically beneficial. The diverse planting attracts a wealth of wildlife, transforming the space into a haven for biodiversity in the midst of the city.

One Crown Place is a prime example of how thoughtful landscape design can enhance the overall quality of a building increasing value for the space, visitors and wildlife.
