5 Common Fears with Self-Weighted Planter Edging

Since its development in 2020 by our R&D team self-weighted planter edging has become the most sustainable and cost-effective way of achieving a raised edge at both the ground floor and roof level.  The Velox Rapid Edge, the first self-weighted planter system, has been successfully installed on some of the most prestigious developments across the UK however, there are a number of understandable concerns facing designers when considering this option.

Architects and landscape designers often face a unique set of challenges when working on roof gardens, podiums, and public realm areas.    In this blog, we’ll explore seven common fears associated with self-weighted planter edging and explain how the Velox Rapid Edge addresses each one.

1. Tipping

Given that this system requires no fixing down, one of the primary concerns with self-weighted planter edging is that the system tips over.  This fear is not without reason, we have seen how without the necessary structural calculations or testing, copies of the Velox system have failed structurally.

During the innovation & development phase of producing the Velox Rapid Edge, mitigating the risk of tipping was a primary goal, a must.  Ensuring that it remains stable was of the highest priority.

The self-weighted design of this system uses the weight of the soil, distributed across the structural base plates, to keep it securely in place.  To ensure peace of mind, not only for designers but also our technical team we undertook a rigorous phase of 3rd-party testing.  This, paired with the external engineers’ structural calculations has given us a proven system; one that has been successfully installed on many developments.

2. Roof Falls

A common misconception is that self-weighted planter edging systems are not applicable to roofs which have a drainage fall.

There are two main ways that the Velox system can work on falls which are detailed further in this Article.

3. Deflection of a self-weighted planter

Deflection refers to the bending or deformation of the edging material, which can occur under the weight of soil.  Planter deflection can cause several severe issues, detracting from the overall appearance and success of the project.

The Velox Rapid Edge Planter System is backed by 3rd party structural calculations on both form and material. The robust construction ensures that it maintains its shape and alignment. This results in clean, straight edges that enhance the visual appeal of the space.

4. Structural Integrity

A common worry is the long-term durability of planter edging systems. Over time, exposure to the elements and the soil’s weight could compromise the edging’s structural integrity, leading to potential failures.

Our system is manufactured using high-quality, corrosion-resistant materials that are designed to withstand the rigors of outdoor environments. The Velox Rapid Edge Planter System undergoes rigorous testing to ensure that it can endure the demands of roof gardens, podiums, and public realm projects, providing reliable performance year after year.

5. Reliance on Internal Bracing

While internal bracing can offer additional support, designers rightfully worry about systems which rely heavily on it, especially if lateral support from adjacent paving is absent. The concern is that without proper external support, the edging system may fail.

The Velox Rapid Edge Planter System can function effectively without internal bracing if sufficient lateral support is present. The system is designed to work alone without brackets or wires that span the width of the planter to prevent tipping.

Conclusion

The Velox Rapid Edge Planter System is specifically designed to address and alleviate the common fears associated with self-weighted planter edging. By providing stability, structural integrity, and aesthetic appeal, our system offers architects and landscape designers a reliable solution for their most challenging projects.
